Frequently Asked Questions
Will I need planning permission for my solar technology system?
You don’t usually need planning permission for most home solar technology systems, but check first with your local planning officer, especially if your building is listed, or is in a conservation area. If you’re unsure, Ecotec Services can advise.
Do the solar panels need regular cleaning?
Usually the rain will do all the cleaning needed. If not, just get in touch and we’ll be able to advise you.
Does the solar technology system need servicing?
A solar PV system does not normally need servicing as it has no moving parts and the other components, such as cables and connectors, are designed to withstand environmental conditions. We suggest you routinely visually inspect your system though (from ground level only) and if you notice any damage, we can advise you.
Is a solar technology system covered by Building Regulations?
Yes, we’ll inform Building Control for you.
How does the electricity generated by a solar PV system return to the grid?
We’ll ensure your system is installed according to the latest electrical installation guidelines. We’ll also advise your District Network Operator (DNO) that we’ve installed your system and deal with any paperwork.
Will I need to get a new boiler for my solar thermal system?
Most conventional boiler and heating systems are compatible with solar water heating. Your current system may not be compatible if you have a combination boiler with no separate hot water cylinder. We will be able to advise you about this.
How much hot water will my solar thermal water heating system produce?
This will depend on the size of the system installed and of course the weather. As a guide, a solar heating system could generate around 2/3 of your hot water needs.
What happens to my solar technology system during a power cut?
For safety reasons, the output of the solar technology system is automatically turned off when it detects a power cut. It automatically restarts when the mains power is back – so you won’t need to do anything.
Who is responsible for any loss or damage for my solar technology system?
In the unlikely event that you suffer any loss or damage as a result of us installing the solar panels, our responsibility to you will be limited to £1 million. Exclusions, terms and conditions apply.
How do I know if I can sign up for the Government’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme (also known as Clean Energy Cashback)?
You can sign up if you are an eligible energy customer who produces their own electricity from a renewable source, It depends on your type of installation. i.e. if you generate your own electricity through a solar PV system.
How do I know if my installation is eligible for FITs?
You are eligible if your renewable source installation is smaller than 5MW capacity and you say yes to the points below:
- Your installation is accredited by the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme).
- Your installation is on the Ofgem central Feed-in Tariff register.
- You already receive or have registered to receive Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROC’s) before 31 March 2010.
If you are unsure whether you are eligible, Ecotec Services can advise you.
How do I register for FITs?
Your electricity supplier can advise you if you are eligible and help you register. Ecotec will of course assist in any way we can.
How do I receive my payments from FITs?
Once you are eligible we will be sent a Clean Energy Cashback contract. You will be paid quarterly, providing you supply your electricity supplier with regular meter readings.
The contract is subject to change by law at any time.
How much will I be paid for generating electricity and for exporting my surplus to the National Grid?
This will depend on your type of installation. Ecotec Services can help you estimate the Feed-in tariff.
